USS Hornet Museum, Alameda |
| The USS Hornet (CV-12) was completed in 1943, and served in WW2, played a role in the Vietnam War, and then took an active part in the Apollo program, recovering astronauts in Apollo missions 11 and 12.
Decomissioned in 1970, it was opened as a museum in 1998. Its location in Alameda, on the site of the old Naval Air Station, next door to Oakland, is a bit off the beaten track, and it was nothing like as busy as the USS Midway museum, on the San Diego waterfront, which is very popular with tourists. Still, it's an interesting visit and worth seeking out. We were there on 9th May. |
